Benazir Bhutto assassinated

Pakistan opposition leader Benazir Bhutto was assassinated Thursday in a suicide attack that also killed at least 20 others at the end of a campaign rally, aides said.
The death of the 54-year-old charismatic former prime minister threw the campaign for the Jan. 8 election into chaos and created fears of mass protests and an eruption of violence across the volatile south Asian nation.
The attacker struck just minutes after Bhutto addressed a rally of thousands of supporters in the garrison city of Rawalpindi, 8 miles south of Islamabad. She was shot in the neck and chest by the attacker, who then blew himself up, said, Rehman Malik, Bhutto's security adviser.

William Kidd's ship found off Dominican island

A U.S. underwater archaeology team announced Thursday it has likely discovered the shattered remnants of a ship once captained by the notorious buccaneer William Kidd off a tiny Dominican Republic island.
The barnacled cannons and anchors found stacked beneath just 10 feet of crystalline coastal waters off Catalina Island are believed to be the wreckage of the Quedagh Merchant, a ship abandoned by the Scottish privateer in 1699, Indiana University researchers say.

A Golden Controversy

The Golden Compass, a film starring Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig has stirred up controversy. The anger stems from the belief that the film is anti-religion and pro-atheism. Some folks plan to boycott the film as a sign of protest. Ironically, searches on "atheism" and "define atheism" have both spiked in response to their efforts. Clearly, people are hearing the message, but not in the way the protestors had hoped.
So, will the boycott hurt or help the film's performance?

Controversial and Grueling Procedure Lengthens Limbs, Risks Lives

Some people can go beyond their thought just to be a few inches taller. A surgeon breaking your leg bones in four places, then attaching a steel scaffold frame to the outside of your limbs with metal pins jutting into your bones.
Every day for months you rotate screws attached to the pins in your legs. There are many moments of excruciating pain and the constant worry of infection. After that there is a grueling regimen of physical therapy. Now imagine, this was all completely voluntary — in fact, it was your idea. A leg-lengthening procedure can cost upwards of $120,000. Jiao Xiaoyu (picture), 19, a drama student from Shanghai, did this surgery to be taller and happy with it.

Saudi rape lawyer faces disciplinary hearing

The Saudi lawyer who represented a victim of gang rape faces a disciplinary hearing Wednesday for "insulting the Supreme Judicial Council and disobeying the rules and regulations" of the judiciary.

Abdul Rahman al-Lahem: "I believe I didn't do anything wrong."

His client is a teenage rape victim who was sentenced to 200 lashes and six months in prison for violating the kingdom's strict Islamic law by being alone with an unrelated man before the rape.
The attacks took place in Qatif in March 2006 when the woman was 18 and engaged to be married.
Her seven rapists were sentenced to between two to nine years in prison.
Abdul Rahman al-Lahem said the rape case had elicited a fierce response, including calls for his beheading.
"These opinions don't scare me, but they make me feel a disappointment that there are people who think this way.
"I wish that those who oppose me could engage in a direct dialogue instead of calling for violence. Unfortunately, they are still stuck in a culture of closed-mindedness."
Al-Lahem, who has two daughters, predicted he would have his revoked license to practice law reinstated on Wednesday and said he would represent the Saudi woman again. The hearing has the power to disbar him.

Missing canoeist of five years arrested in UK

A British man who reappeared five years after he was thought to have drowned in a canoeing accident has been arrested on suspicion of fraud, police confirmed Wednesday. The police are investigating the authenticity of a photo published in British tabloid newspaper the Daily Mirror, which claims to show John Darwin alongside his wife on the balcony of an apartment in Panama City in July 2006.
The 57-year-old was presumed dead in 2002 after he went missing after going canoeing in the North Sea off the coastal town of Seaton Carew, in northeast England.
Hutchinson said police had been probing the case over the past few months in relation to some financial enquiries.
Darwin, a prison officer and former teacher, was declared dead by a coroner in 2003, 13 months after he went missing. But on Saturday Darwin walked in to a police station in central London and told officers: "I think I am a missing person", a spokeswoman for Cleveland Police, the local force investigating the case, told CNN.
According to widespread media reports, Darwin told police that he did not remember where he had been for the last five years.
He was later reunited with his two sons, Mark, 31, and Anthony, 29, who released a joint statement saying the reappearance of their father was "a huge shock." The statement said their mother, Darwin's wife Anna, who is believed to have moved to Panama last month after selling the couple's home in Seaton Carew, had also been informed of the news and "was delighted to hear it."

One of the Forgotten Modern Wonders of the World- Big Ben

Possibly the most famous clock face and chimes in the world, Big Ben is actually the name of the biggest bell (13.5 tons) inside The Clock Tower (320ft) which forms part of the HOUSES OF PARLIAMENT.

Built in 1858/9 the bell was named after one Sir Benjamin Hall and when it was cast it was Britain's heaviest bell.
The clock's four dials each have a diameter of 23ft, the minute hands are 14ft long and the numerals on each face are nearly 2 feet high. The accuracy of the clock movement is controlled by the placing of old pennies in the mechanism.

There is a light at the top of the tower which, when lit, indicates that the House of Commons is sitting. During the day you can tell if they're sitting by looking for a flag at the top of the nearby Victoria Tower which is the tallest and largest of the Westminster towers.
The tower which houses Big Ben has been called by many names, one of the most popular being St Stephen's Tower. However, the official line, from the Head of Public Information at the Palace is that the Clock Tower is simply called The Clock Tower. The subject of John Buchan's "39 Steps", the Clock Tower is unfortunately not open to the public so you won't be able to check how many steps actually lead to the belfry.

Entangled tails-The Rat Kings

This engraving is of a rat king found at Johann Heinrich Jager's flour-grinding mill at Gross Ballheiser, Holland on July 13, 1748. The rats were hidden under the cogwheels and fell out from between two stones. According to Martin Hart's definitive book "Rats" (London, 1982), 57 incidents of rat kings were recorded between 1564 and 1963, mostly in Germany and all among black rats. Most kings consist of five to twelve rats, which are often of the same age, seemingly not yet adult. They are usually found alive, discovered because of their loud squeals and in the sort of places where black rats make their nests (behind walls, in lofts, cellars and barns).
