Cryosurgery - A hope for cancer patient

For cancers that could not be cut out, doctors have another option: freezing cancer cells to death.

Cryosurgery - destroying cells by freezing

“Cryosurgery has a long history and has been used to treat diseases such as warts,” said Dr Niu Lizhi who has vast experience in cryosurgery.

Cryosurgery, otherwise called cryoablation or cryotherapy, is the destruction of tissues – generally, tumour tissues – using very low temperatures (-1960C to -1870C) produced by liquid nitrogen or argon gas respectively.

“This destruction is in situ. That means you don’t remove the tissue that you freeze, and the tissues will be reabsorbed by the body when destruction happens,” said Dr Franco Lugnani, president of the International Society of Cryosurgery (ISC).

In 1974, the International Society of Cryosurgery was founded as many doctors (in urology, dermatology, hepatology and gynaecology) used liquid nitrogen to destroy tissues, he added.

“Of course, in those days, you could apply liquid nitrogen somewhere but it was very difficult to control how the liquid nitrogen, at freezing temperatures, is delivered. And we do not have imaging modalities – we just have our eyes and our fingers,” Dr Lugnani said. Approaching the 90s, the advent of new imaging modalities like the ultrasound and CT scan had revived interest in cryosurgery.

“Eventually, we are able to control what we were delivering inside the body,” Dr Lugnani explained.

Cryosurgery can be used in two different aspects, he said. It can be used when conventional treatment modalities – surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy – has failed, especially in cancers of the lung, pancreas, uterus and breast.

There are also situations where cryosurgery can be used as first line treatment, for instance in kidney, prostate, some liver and some lung cancers, Dr Lugnani said.

Miley Cyrus says Vanity Fair photo spread embarrasses her

LOS ANGELES - Miley Cyrus is taking issue with a photo of herself that's going around, and it's not another amateur, truth-or-dare Internet snapshot — it's the handiwork of Annie Leibovitz.
"I took part in a photo shoot that was supposed to be 'artistic' and now, seeing the photographs and reading the story, I feel so embarrassed," Cyrus said Sunday in a statement through her publicist. "I never intended for any of this to happen and I apologize to my fans who I care so deeply about."
The photos, appearing in the upcoming issue of Vanity Fair, were taken by Leibovitz, a renowned celebrity photographer whose edgy, silver-toned portraits have included subjects such as Angelina Jolie, Scarlett Johansson and a naked, pregnant Demi Moore.
The Cyrus pictures accompany an interview with the 15-year-old pop star and her father, singer Billy Ray Cyrus. They include shots of the teen wrapped in what appears to be a satin bedsheet, looking over her shoulder with her back exposed.

Facial made of bird excrement in New York spa

Forget avocado, evening primrose oil or other exotic ingredients, the latest facial to hit New York is a mask made with bird excrement.
The Geisha Facial, available at Shizuka New York for $180, about $100 more than the shop's other facials, contains nightingale excrement.
The Japanese powder, also known as uguisu no fun, is rich in the amino acid guanine, said to brighten and cleanse skin. In the 18th century geishas and kabuki actors used the powder to clean heavy white makeup off their faces.

More news on Edison Chen scandal

  • After getting cut from the new film Jump <跳出去> by Columbia Pictures, Edison has also been dumped by credit card company Manhattan Titanium because of the scandal. Sing Tao Daily estimates the scandal could cost Edison HK$10m a year in work and endorsements. Other sponsors of Edison include Pepsi, Levi's, Jacobs & Co, Samsung and EPS, and the star is said to be able to fetch as much as HK$1m for each endorsement.
    Edison Chen will be
back in Hong Kong this week. His management at East Asia Music has denied that he fled Hong Kong to escape from the fallout. Meanwhile, Edison's godfather Anthony Wong (黃秋生), said that Edison will return to Hong Kong to "help the police catch the 'crazy man' who is leaking the sex photos".

  • Bobo Chan seems to have been hit the worst. After having left show business in 2006, she led a relatively quiet life and was even going to marry her investment company director boyfriend Kam Chi Yiu (金紫耀). The marriage has apparently been called off and now that Bobo Chan is uncontactable, good friend Denise Ho (何韻詩) and ex-boss Nat Chan (陳百祥) have expressed concern.

  • Hong Kong police have arrested the ninth suspect and charged him with breaking obscenity laws. Protestors have taken to the streets criticising the police for its special treatment of celebrities, its invasion of privacy of internet users and its hunt for a scapegoat despite the continued leak of pictures. "Kira", the mystery man is still at large and presumably outside of Hong Kong. He had earlier promised the widely anticipated video to be timed with Gillian Chung's public appearance, but has now postponed the release to 3am TONIGHT.

You may not be able to understand Chinese, but those tears streaming down her face in the interview are universal. Don’t look at these pics at work.
The scandal started after pictures were taken from Edison Chen’s laptop by a technician that was repairing it. There were a total of approximately 1,300 pictures. The naughty pictures included Bobo Chan Man, Cecilia Cheung Pak Chi, Edison Chen, Gillian Chung, Gillian Chung Yun-Tung, Joey Yung, Yumiko Cheng, some say even Japanese star Chiaki Kuriyama, and possibly more.

Amy Winehouse lead Grammy list

Amy Winehouse won 5 Grammys but didn't win the Album of the Year.
The talk of the night was a live satellite performance by Winehouse, whose troubled personal life has been the talk of the music industry. She received a visa to enter the United States too late to perform on the show in Los Angeles, and was beamed in live from a London studio.

Winehouse rose above the stories and speculation with a confident performance. Dressed in a flowing black party dress (accented by tattoos), Winehouse partied seriously on "You Know I'm No Good," and followed it up with the megahit "Rehab." Her presence and panache blew the roof off with her prancing moves, knowing winks and emotive vocals. Perhaps never before has a singer's current circumstances so mirrored her music — one more element in Winehouse's success.

Benazir Bhutto assassinated

Pakistan opposition leader Benazir Bhutto was assassinated Thursday in a suicide attack that also killed at least 20 others at the end of a campaign rally, aides said.
The death of the 54-year-old charismatic former prime minister threw the campaign for the Jan. 8 election into chaos and created fears of mass protests and an eruption of violence across the volatile south Asian nation.
The attacker struck just minutes after Bhutto addressed a rally of thousands of supporters in the garrison city of Rawalpindi, 8 miles south of Islamabad. She was shot in the neck and chest by the attacker, who then blew himself up, said, Rehman Malik, Bhutto's security adviser.

A U.S. underwater archaeology team announced Thursday it has likely discovered the shattered remnants of a ship once captained by the notorious buccaneer William Kidd off a tiny Dominican Republic island.
The barnacled cannons and anchors found stacked beneath just 10 feet of crystalline coastal waters off Catalina Island are believed to be the wreckage of the Quedagh Merchant, a ship abandoned by the Scottish privateer in 1699, Indiana University researchers say.
